Jacob is a senior at Temple University studying Sport and Recreation Management with a concentration in Governance and Policy. He isĀ an avid lover of sport and recreation, and through his experiences has learned about how they can impact life and culture. He is looking to make industry connections and gain additional experience through both academic and professional pursuits.
About Jacob Wellman

After high school in Kentucky, Jacob chose to leave school and enter the workforce, giving him an opportunity to learn about and find himself. He traveled east to Harlan, Kentucky, where he joined the Christian Appalachian Group (āCAPā) as a full-time volunteer helping low-income families in the Appalachian mountain region of Kentucky. It was through his work with CAP that Jacob found his true calling: helping others through service.

After more than a year of service with CAP, Jacob continued his journey of self-exploration, this time traveling across the country as a cable technician. Through his work, Jacob was given unique opportunity to see much of the countryās urban areas and immerse himself in different communities. This work provided Jacob the time he needed to mature and evaluate his future. It was during his time in some of the poorest areas of the country that Jacobās passion for service was reinvigorated.

He decided that he was finally ready to make the transition into college to pursue his degree. Jacob returned home and enrolled in community college, where he was eager and ready to begin studying for a degree that he would eventually be able to use to help others. While narrowing down the focus of his studies, Jacob came across the Sport and Recreation Management program at Temple University. He was thrilled to learn about the opportunity to combine his passion for sport with his passion for service. He decided to uproot his life in Kentucky and move to Philadelphia to continue his education at Temple.

Jacob is currently a senior completing his last semester of coursework and determining where he would like to work and be most effective in the sport and recreation industry. Through his industry experiences, coursework, and self-reflection, Jacob really sees himself working in a community development role for an organization or a fundraising position with nonprofit industries with a focus on helping the community through sport. Jacob really believes that his top education, positive feedback, and networking throughout the industry is leading him back to service in a more effective role.

Prepare for home athletic events, mainly football and basketball, by creating and distributing marketing and promotional materials. Creating the materials requires utilizing Microsoft Office and Adobe Suite, including Photoshop. Engaging student community by working different events to raise awareness of on-campus athletic events and creating a positive and enjoyable atmosphere for students at athletic events through giveaways and student activities.

Intern, Seashore Day Camp and School

Responsibilities include creating and executing school and day camp sport programs, working with faculty to create a positive and engaging environment for campers grades Pre-K - 8th grade, supervising and instructing junior counselors, and ensuring that campers adhere to safety regulations and protocols when participating in activities. Roles included physical education instructor, swim instructor, and mentor for up-and-coming camp staff. In addition to these roles, I received hands-on experience as to the administration of a sport and rec program. Administrative duties included composing and sending emails to parents and staff, cataloging Presidential testing results, and organizing schedules.

Responsibilities included camp counselor for elementary-age children as well as working on home restoration projects, repairing and building homes for low-income families. During my time with CAP I assisted with cleanup projects after major flooding and ice storms in Eastern Kentucky by organizing, operating, and working with disaster relief organizations (food, clothing, shower facilities, coordination among various volunteer entities, etc.). This was especially important among citizens who moved to Kentucky after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, also Ī¦ĪĪ or sometimes PTK, is the international honor society of two-year colleges and academic programs. With Phi Theta Kappa, Jacob engaged in various marketing activities on and off campus to promote collegefish.org, a website to help students apply for scholarships.
Jacob also helped receive and record donations during a PBS winter telethon and collaborated on award winning fundraising applications and essays.
